Beta angle and eclipse model
The beta angle is the angle between the sun vector and the orbit plane:
sin β = cos δ_s·sin i·sin(Ω − α_s) + sin δ_s·cos i
with (α_s, δ_s) the sun's right ascension/declination from a low-precision ephemeris. For a circular orbit in a cylindrical Earth shadow, an eclipse occurs when |β| < β* where sin β* = R_E/(R_E+h), and the eclipse fraction is
f_E = (1/π)·acos( √(h²+2·R_E·h) / ((R_E+h)·cos β) )
The year sweep advances Ω at the J2 secular rate (sun rate for SSO) and the sun along the ecliptic. Penumbra and oblateness effects (~±1–2 min) are neglected — adequate for power/thermal sizing.
