Walker delta patterns
A Walker delta constellation i:T/P/F spreads P orbital planes evenly over 360° of RAAN (Δ Ω = 360°/P), with T/P satellites evenly spaced in each plane (Δ M = 360·P/T within a plane). The phasing factor F (0…P−1) staggers adjacent planes by ΔM = 360°·F/T, which controls how satellites interleave at plane crossings — critical for avoiding coverage gaps and, at low altitude, collision risk at high-latitude crossings.
GPS uses roughly 55°:24/6/1 at 20 180 km; Iridium is a near-polar Walker star 86.4°:66/6/2 at 780 km. Broadband LEO shells are Walker deltas with tens of planes.
